Lengths of wood are arranged in asymmetrical patterns during these preliminary steps and glued together. Then before the final glue up, the boards are cross cut with each strip flipped to their end-grain and every other strip is rotated 180 degrees. That’s how you get patterns with different types of wood and shapes.
